How I'm Building AI Citations for AEO-REX from Zero (Week 1)

Shanaz Begum
Shanaz Begum
Founder & Chief AEO Consultant at AEO-REX

Direct Answer: Building AI citations from zero requires proper technical foundation, structured data, authoritative content, and backlinks—plus time for AI systems to discover and trust your site. As of Week 1 (October 30, 2025), AEO-REX has zero AI citations, but I'm documenting the entire journey publicly.

I'm Shanaz Begum, founder of AEO-REX, and I help businesses get cited by AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.

But here's the uncomfortable truth: as of today, AI systems aren't citing AEO-REX yet.

🎯 Week 1 Key Takeaways

  • Technical foundation is CRITICAL—robots.txt was completely missing
  • Schema markup (FAQ, Article, Dataset) makes content AI-parseable
  • URL consistency matters: mixed aeo-rex.com vs www.aeo-rex.com confuses search engines
  • Starting from zero is normal—even AEO experts have to build from ground up
  • Transparency builds more trust than fake overnight success stories

Why I'm Documenting This Publicly

Most AEO consultants show you their wins but hide their starting point. That's misleading.

The reality? Building AI citations takes time and systematic work—even for specialists like me. Instead of pretending I'm already cited everywhere, I'm documenting the entire journey from day one.

This weekly blog series will track:

  • Exactly what I implement each week
  • Real metrics (backlinks, citations, traffic)
  • What works and what doesn't
  • Challenges and setbacks
  • Timeline to first citations

Week 1: Building the Technical Foundation

Before any AI system will cite you, they need to discover and trust your site. That starts with technical infrastructure.

What I Implemented This Week

1. Created robots.txt (Was completely missing!)

Without robots.txt, some AI crawlers may skip your site entirely. I explicitly allowed:

  • GPTBot (ChatGPT)
  • ChatGPT-User
  • CCBot (Common Crawl, used by various AI)
  • Claude-Web (Anthropic's Claude)
  • anthropic-ai
  • PerplexityBot
  • Google-Extended (Google AI)

2. Fixed Sitemap URL Consistency

My sitemap referenced aeo-rex.com but canonical URLs used www.aeo-rex.com. This confuses search engines and dilutes SEO authority. Now everything consistently uses the www subdomain.

3. Added FAQ Schema Markup

I added structured FAQ schema to the homepage with 7 common questions about AEO. This helps AI systems extract clear answers for citation purposes.

"Schema markup is like speaking AI's native language. Without it, you're asking them to translate messy HTML. With it, you're serving structured, citation-ready answers." — My hard-learned lesson from Week 1

4. Implemented Open Graph & Twitter Cards

Added social meta tags across all pages for better link previews and social signals. While not directly affecting AI citations, social sharing generates backlinks—which AI systems DO care about.

5. Created Citation-Worthy Resources

  • AEO Statistics page with 20+ verifiable data points
  • Blog post template optimized for AI citations
  • This transparent case study you're reading now

Not pretty, right? But this is the reality of starting from scratch.

The Biggest Challenges So Far

Challenge #1: The Credibility Paradox

How do I sell AEO services when I'm not cited by AI myself? The answer: radical transparency. Instead of hiding this, I'm making it the foundation of my credibility.

Challenge #2: Time vs. Client Expectations

Clients want results in weeks. Reality? Even with perfect technical setup, AI discovery takes 6-12 weeks. Managing expectations while building proof is a tightrope walk.

Challenge #3: The Chicken-and-Egg of Backlinks

AI systems trust sites with authoritative backlinks. But how do you get backlinks when you're just starting? Answer: Create citation-worthy content (like this transparent case study) that people WANT to link to.

What's Next (Week 2 Goals)

Here's my roadmap for the coming week:

  1. Submit to Google Search Console and request indexing for key pages
  2. Share AEO statistics page on LinkedIn to generate first backlinks
  3. Create LinkedIn Company Page for AEO-REX
  4. Publish 1 more blog post using AI-optimized template
  5. Test 8 queries across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI
  6. Set up Google Business Profile

Why This Matters for Your Business

If you're reading this, you're probably wondering: "Should I invest in AEO if even the expert is starting from zero?"

Here's the thing: Every business starts from zero in AI search. The question isn't whether to start—it's whether you'll do it systematically or haphazardly.

By following my journey, you'll learn:

  • What actually works (backed by real data)
  • What doesn't work (so you avoid my mistakes)
  • Realistic timelines (no fake overnight success promises)
  • The exact process from zero to consistent citations

Final Thoughts

Week 1 is about laying groundwork—the unglamorous technical work that makes everything else possible.

Will I have citations by Week 4? Maybe one platform. Full coverage? Probably Week 10-12.

But here's what I know for certain: This transparent journey is becoming the most valuable case study I can offer clients. Because when AEO-REX does achieve consistent AI citations, you'll have watched the entire process unfold—no smoke, no mirrors, just real work producing real results.

Follow along: I'll publish Week 2 updates next Wednesday. Bookmark this blog or follow me on LinkedIn for real-time progress.
